Three killed, 25 hurt as rain batters province

HYDERABAD, Aug 9: Three people were killed and 25 suffered injuries in rain related incidents in different parts of the province and a canal developed breach as heavy to moderate rains continued to lash Sindh on the second day running on Thursday.

Intermittent rain continued in Hyderabad and its adjoining areas leading to suspension of water and power in many parts of the city. Meteorological office has recorded 24 millimetres of rain so far during last 24 hours. It led to traffic jams on almost all the main roads which had been dug up for development work.

A youth was electrocuted, two labourers were struck dead by lightning and three others suffered injuries late into the Wednesday nigh in Mirpurkhas.

Manzoor Arain alias Bhuro, 25, was working on a welding machine at a shop near Mirwah Gorchani when he received electric shock and died on the spot.

Zaheer Khan Leghari, 20, and Dada Unnar, 50, were working in Chaudhry Shoaib Farm near Jhuddo when lightning killed them. In another incident Zulfikar Ali and his mother were seriously injured when the roof of their house collapsed in Kot Ghulam Mohammad while the driver of a motorcycle rickshaw Saleem Leghari was seriously injured when a tractor trolley hit his vehicle at Chandni Chowk during rains.

Puran Distry fed by Jamrao division developed a 20-foot breach during rain near Mirwah Gorchani late on Wednesday night inundating standing crops on hundreds of acres.

Villagers plugged the breach towards Thursday evening on self-help basis.

Rain paralysed routine life in the city and led to power breakdown which stretched to 10 to 12 hours in Mirpurkhas, Umerkot and Tharparkar districts and caused an increase in the prices of vegetables due to short supply from rural areas.

Intermittent rain in Thatta led to flooding of main bazaar located on both sides of the newly constructed National Highway, which had been considerably raised.

As the highway has no rain drain the water flowed directly into the bazaar.

With the start of rains Thatta, Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro, Jati, Chuhar Jamali and Mirpur Sakro experienced power suspension for last 24 hours. It would cause some damage to vegetable and banana crops but would be beneficial for paddy and sugarcane crop, growers said.

Meanwhile, Faqir Mohammad Hijab of Siddique Hijab village died of snakebite on Thursday.

Heavy downpour with thunder storm lashed Shahdadkot and its adjoining areas for more than an hour uprooting tress and submerging low-lying areas. A number of kutcha houses collapsed in the suburbs of the town but there were no report of any casualty or eventuality from any part of the district.

In Badin district, 18 people, including four women suffered injuries when a bus carrying passengers from Kadhan town to Singari village fell into a Sim nullah due to slipperiness caused by rain.

The injured including Ms Maryam, Ms Bhano, Ms Mooran, Ms Rahiman, Karim Bux, Basheer Ahmed, Ghulam Mustafa, Allah Dino and Kirshan were admitted to Kadhan Rural Health Centre.

In another incident, a minor boy Javed Ali Shah was injured when the roof of his house collapsed near Seerani Road in the city.

The heavy rain, which started at about 2.30pm on Thursday continued with intervals till 7pm leading to traffic jams and choking sewers in many parts of the city. There were, however, no reports of any loss of life from any part of the district.

In Nawabshah rain started lashing the city and its adjoining areas at around 5:00 pm inundating low-lying areas and leading to suspension of water and power.

Ms Rbia, 30, Ms Razia, 18, and Bushra, 19, were inured when roofs of their houses collapsed in different parts of the city while Allah Bux suffered injuries when he slipped on the road due to slime.

Met office has recorded 54 mm rain and around the district.
