Great Rush, Force and Resistance during Food Distribution
Although SAHARO and READ volunters tried and planned well to carry distribution process peacefully but as People are greatly desperate for food, as most of population is scare and have concern that if they eat this time then who will feed them for next time, so READ Volunteers came across with great rush, physical force from victims .It was very hard to distribute aid in order or peacefully. Sindh Youth Council volunteers heard a scream in the soul in Jamshoro, today

Dosto.
Sindh Youth Council, with financial support from Saharo, fed 550 people with naan with potato and kidney beans curry. We also distributed powdered milk, sugar, and tea packages among 100 families. We have been noticing that people are not bathing, and do not wash cloths either. So we gave a bar of bath soap and a bar of laundry soap to 100 families.
Today we went to a camp for the first time in Jamshoro. Approximately 100 families are scattered on a large parcel of land across from University of Sindh. Many of you already know that this part of Jamshoro is dry, baron, and torrid. It can be very brutal in hot summer days. It is very painful to see these people living in such conditions without food, water, and shelter. Imagine little babies staying in this heat all day long, and sleeping on rocky ground pebbles poking in their bodies. To make the matters worst the god father of the university’s filter plan does not allow them to take water from his facility.
While working in the area, and passing through those families I noticed that they did not have anything to store water. These people need something to store water, either matkas, or water coolers.
Everywhere we went in this camp the old ladies followed us and begged us in the name of Allah to give them something. They kept pleading with us that they did not have anything to eat since yesterday. Alas! This was our last stop, and we did not have enough food to feed everybody in this camp.
Personally I feel very down tonight when those images flash in my mind.

I want to continue with food campaign for now along with medical camp. There are approximately 700 people in this camp. For as long as we have money we will continue feeding them with food. After we run out of money we will see what are our options?
Sindh Youth Council has gotten pledge from four doctors; two females, and two males. We are in process of negotiating with a school administration to allow us use two rooms in school for medical clinic. One of our doctor volunteers has an ultra sound machine, which will be very useful for female patients.
I am already looking at the broader picture. Imagine, these flood ladies get pregnant! Don’t tell me government hospitals will take care of them. The government hospitals can’t even take care of Gastro patients.

Friends

The floods are ongoing in many parts of Sindh. The disasterous impact is becoming clearer every day. Additional people are moving to roads and unknown destination. Disease is increasing. Girls are being kidnapped. Law and order is worsening. People are selling their animals and gold at fraction of prices just to get to safer areas.

We need to do more. Contribute more. Give it to who ever you like and trust. But please do it.

We have been trying to brief you about joint activities of Saharo and Mabel Foundations. We are appealing to all of you to double your original donations and do as much as you can do. Join me in implementing accelerated relief program.

Thanks and God bless us all-- the victims and the helpers.

Dosto.

Today, Saharo fed approximately 300 flood victims on Jamshoro Bund, and Bye Pass. While distributing food to hungry, we observed a very painful phenomenon on the Jamshoro Bye Pass.
So, Saharo, Hyderabad, decided to take chicken qorma, and naan instead. We went to Jamshoro Bund, and Jamshoro Bye Pass, where hundreds of flood affected were camped out under the open sky, exposed to heavy down pour, as well as to the scorching heat. The time is running out on us. Saharo Hyderabad is still waiting on the word to make arrangements for the Eid for those less fortunate among us. Please let me know ASAP, so we can plan in time. These families need your help on this Eid-ul-Fitr.

25 Aug 2010 Saharo Sukkur volunteer

Dear Brothers.

Hope everyone is fine and healthy.

First of all I want to share some good news!
• water level of Sindhu[Indus] around Sukkur is continuously decreasing.
• I have crossed 100+ new cloths for women and girls along-with Chadar and chappal. [30 from SAHARO and remaining from various merchants and social circle of friends]. All these will inshallah be distributed on 21th Ramzan pics will also be shared with you friends.

On Sunday with the help of friends I visited three relief camps situated in Govt degree college, Govt comprehensive college and Govt High school near intermediate board office sukkur along-with cooked food and clean water for 300 people. Funds were acquired from social circle of friends.

Milk [Liquid / Powder] and fabric made net protecting child from mosquitoes are in desperate need for children's.
Medicine box as I have already mentioned in my early e-mail would be more effective for people who are not living in camps, i.e living roads, canal's banks and on highway.

Again I will mention here that all people are getting cooked food 2 times a day.

24 Aug 2010

Dear Friends,
On behalf of READ and SAHARO , READ volunteers we are grateful to all friends who have sent us Rs 50000/=.The money is arrived to day but due to fault in bank's computer system we receive it tomorrow. Until we receive money and physically go for aid distribution I submit here some work report.
1. On 24-08-2010 READ team visited different camps located at Jamshoro, Hyderabad Sabzi Mandi and Qasimabad .
2. The main reason of visits were to find information and identify most turbulent camps, as aid could reach out to most deserving peoples.

3. Ultimately one camp has been selected which is located at Shahbaz Housing Society close to Tool Plaza Hyderabad (few pictures of camp are attached).

4. At least 2000 thousand victims live there where most number of flood victims is consist on children of all ages from 1 day to 14 years .

5.The next number of victims is women and old age women ; one old lady cried and said to our member that "if she wont get food today she commit suicide because it is over now at one side we have lost our every thing on the other hands we have nothing to feed our self and our children ".
6. READ conducted a survey from 200 people and on the basis of that survey
150 families were categorized into two groups (At camp shahbaz housing
Society).

Group1. Families consist on 5 to 7 members (minimum family number is 5 to 7,
mother, father, children some where grand father and grand
mother).

Group2. Families consist on more than 7 to 12 people (in camp most of families
belongs 7 to 12 number of family members).

Aid Distribution Strategy

1. Aid items;

Group 1:
A. Food Items: Pulse ½ kg,
Onion 1 kg,
Cooking oil 3 kg
Tea: 3 Sachets
Floor 2½ Kg
Salt and Red Spice 250 grams
Sugar ½ kg, (All item will be packed in one bag)

B. Milk Packs for Children under age 5 years

½ Liter for two children for 1 day

This stuff will fulfill food requirements of 5-7 family members for two days (As sometime cooked food arrives but it do not reach to all people, so most of residents of camp requested that they should be given uncooked food as they can cook it when they don’t receive food or when they are hungry; most of people were hungry and haven’t had food for more than 12 hours; most people have their own utensils (READ survey)

Group 2: Above packing will be doubled for families of group 2
category

Medicine:

Medicine consist on ORS, antibiotics, anti-allergic tablets, Itchy tube, folic acid (for pregnant women) multi Vitamins and iron (Medicine will be given on the prescription of lady doctor/doctor).

Note:
1. The receipts of all purchasing and camp pictures will be sent out through scan
to donors .
2. READ have identified and categorized the families and have issued Aid Token, on the basis of Token food and other items from camp will be distributed to flood victims as every one can easily access to food without making rush .

3. As it is not clear that how long people will live in camps and current aid fulfill food requirements only for few days. Therefore we humbly request to all generous friends that please come forward and donate for victims.

4. We will be sending day to day flood relief camp reports

This report has been generated to keep inform our friends about our activities and strategies, if you have any suggestion which make our aid distribution process still more convenient then please contact.

Today we had another big day. We prepared medical packs, and inserted hand written instructions in them.

We held a free medical clinic, and treated 8 children with flood diseases. Our doctor, Abdul Wahab Soomro administered drip on a Gastro patient girl, while gave injections to another 5 children who had Gastro. We treated two children with skin disease. All of the children received medical packs as well.

We distributed chana biryani among 150 flood affected people, and distributed medical packs among 50 families.

We discovered a camp with residents that did not have any pots, pans, or dishes. They were complaining that they did not had a glass to drink water, or a cooler or matka to store water. They also did not have plates to eat from.

I'm continuously spending my evenings with my effective people. Below are few of observations and our relief efforts.
1. Almost 95% of people are getting foods 2-3 times a day in Sukkur/Rohri and their surroundings. Most of these efforts of PPP and other organizations i.e MQM jamat-e-Islami, Memon group and local merchants.
2. Every day 5-8 children are dying due to Gestro and Sun stroke.
3. Condition of women is miserable as most of places are opened, uncovered and without bathrooms. At the time when they left the homes most of women were in single suit.

I want to make more emphasis on women and children problems as I'm observing on daily basis.

I have ordered new 30 suits for women and girls these includes complete suit including "Chadar" and Chappal, [Receipts / Bills are attached]

One complete new suit with Chadar, Chappal [slipper] and stitching from trailer is of Rs. 562/= [All these stuff will available from trailer on 20th Ramzan]. on 21st Ramzan I will hand over these stuff to poor old women and girls along-with Rs. 100/= in cash.

Suggestions.
Children are dying for Gestro. I have also discussed with Ada Aijaz abro regarding this situation. People who are sitting with their families on open grounds with their remaining household stuff are not usually moving from their places to hospitals / pharmacy for medicines even they are not able to purchase general medicines.
If we prepare a box of general medicines which includes medicines of Gestro, Skin diseases, fever, Mospel. These medicines should mark by numbers i.e 1. for Gestro. 2 for Skin diseases. 3 for fever and so on with complete paper printed in Sindhi in which complete symptoms of these general disease should available. [I think it will work]

Please suggest.

19 August 2010 Appeal sent
Friends,

Saharo Foundation www.saharo.org and Mabel Foundation www.mabelfoundation.org are continuously engaged in flood relief activities. We have teams on ground helping in rescue efforts, providing food and shelter in remote areas. Millions have been displaced; hundreds have died from hunger and diseases like gastro.
During past weeks, rains have caused devastating flooding in Pakistan’s history; more than 20 million have been affected directly. This destruction is enormous; those conditions are heart breaking.

"Although governments have been coming forward with increasing generosity, the public response has not been the immediate outpouring of generosity that we've seen for Haiti and the tsunami five years ago," the U.N. Under Secretary John Holmes.

“Yet relief agencies say the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Pakistan is even greater than this year's earthquake in Haiti”. CBS
Saharo and Mabel Foundation have donated Pakistani rupees Rs.300, 000, this money is being used by our volunteers on ground to buy daily use items from markets and they have been supplying those items in hard hit areas. This money has been collected from all American friends. We do not DRAW any salaries, charge overhead cost, and do not have any mystery charges. We have one goal which is to help the humans on humanitarian grounds by cutting middleman and overhead cost in the time of need. So far we have fed hundreds of families who are out of their homes.
We strongly urge you to please come forward and donate; your donations are tax exempt. Let’s unite for the sake of humanity, let’s support them, and make them realize that we do care for them and their children.

Weldone Ada Riaz.

I did hear that the entire highway between Shikarpur and Sukkur has become the camp for flood victims.

Today I located a lot of flood victims camps sporadically spread all over Hyderabad. Due to lack of transportation and Ramadan I was only able to visit a small camp of victims from Thull, in Hur Camp neighborhood of Hyderabad. I have arranged a car for tomorrow and intend to visit camps along Hala Naka, Jamshoro, Khuda Ki Basti in Kotri, Wahdat Colony High School, Qasimabad High School. I expect to visit more than two thousand people in these camps.

I have located 500 hand fans with a lady in Shikarpur at eight rupees a piece. I was hoping to get at least 1,000 of them.

Matkas are sold at around thirty rupees each if bought in bulk.

There is a widespread complaint about the unavailability of medical care in the camps. The government doctors visit the camps briefly.

I had a meeting with a doctor and here is the list of immediate medical itmes he recommends.

According to him, these items are very important to families in relief camps:
• ORS a powder for dehydration
• Flagyl - syrup and tablets for motions
• Paracetamol - syrup and tablets
• Anti Allergic Tablets
• Scabilan ointment for skin rash
• Cough syrup.

Dear Friends,

Situation in Pakistan is worsening by every single minute. Millions are on roads lacking food, water, and other daily need items. Floods have caused a devastating damage to the cities and towns of Sindh and Punjab.
U.N. officials on Saturday confirmed the first cholera case among survivors. As people go without access to clean drinking water and basic health services, deadly cholera outbreaks can spread quickly.
Other cases are suspected among the tens of thousands of people suffering from diarrhea and fever, the number of people affected by catastrophic floods to 20 million, and the United Nations said 6 million of those victims lack access to food, shelter, and water.
"Our whole world has been ruined by the flood, and the whole of Sindh is drowning," he said. "We do not know how long we will have to suffer.” a Flood Victim

Friends,

People back home are suffering from devastating floods. Millions are
affected, and are out of their homes waiting for food.

Saharo Foundation had supported flood victims few years ago. Saharo
Is run by people who do not take any overhead cost, which means your
100% donation will go in the hands of
Derserving people.

Here how we did last time, we collected money, sent to our reliable
person, who went to buy daily use items, volunteers packed small
packages with those items, volunteers went to those areas which were
hard hit and distributed the stuff. We received receipts, store phone
numbers, videos, and item by item list of things and names of people.

There will be same drill this time, so please come forward and donate,
single dollar makes difference for those who have no food and their
kids are asking for it.
