Call for Applications - One World Fellowship Scheme 2007

“Two weeks that can change the future of broadcasting in developing countries”

Feyçal Caunhye, Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (2006 Fellow)

The 12th One World Fellowship Scheme, run in collaboration with the British Council, is currently open to applications to join the 2007 programme.

Deadline for applications:

Noon (GMT) on 24th August 2007

To apply, please download Application form and Guidelines here.

Aimed at senior radio and television broadcasters from developing countries, the Scheme brings a select group of broadcast professionals to the UK for a 2 week period in October-November. During this time a packed and varied programme is set up, tailored to meet the interests of those selected to participate.

The programme aims to provide an opportunity to contribute ideas, share concerns and develop new goals. It is also a chance for relationships and contacts to be made and, equally importantly, for the UK media to hear what you have to say and learn from your experiences.

Successful applicants have their international travel and accommodation expenses paid for the duration of the programme, and are given a daily living and travel allowance. They are guided throughout the programme by representatives from the One World Broadcasting Trust.

Please note: The Fellowship Scheme is not a ‘hands on’ training programme. It is based on discussion groups only. There will however be an opportunity to spend ½ day shadowing within a broadcasting organisation.

What are the key dates?

The 2007 Fellowship Scheme runs from 22nd October to 2nd November 2007. Successful applicants will arrive in London on 21st October, and depart 3rd November. (Any additional nights must be covered at the fellow’s own expense.)

The closing date for applications is noon (GMT) 24th August 2007, and we will try to notify successful applicants by 15th September.

Who can apply?

Applications are welcomed from developing country broadcasters. You must be able to demonstrate substantial broadcasting experience to be able to participate fully and gain the most out of the programme. We will be looking for senior or up-and-coming professionals who can show their eagerness to develop their skills further and seek greater challenges.

The Scheme is aimed at those already operating at a senior level and who have the potential to move up to top management within their broadcast organisation. It is not for those already at the top of the tree, nor for junior production or management personnel. Such ‘high-fliers’ would normally be around 30-40 years of age (although by no means exclusively), and a condition of their application is a fluency in English – both written and spoken. The Scheme is limited to 5 or 6 Fellows per year.

Specific selection criteria include:

Fluency in written and spoken English
2/3 years experience at a senior level of broadcasting with a clear upward career path
Top career potential
Sufficiently senior to be able to propose and implement change, with line management responsibility for programme producers/directors
Hands on broadcaster or manager (not an academic or theoretician)
Assertive & confident, and thus able and willing to engage actively in debate or dialogue with UK broadcasters
Has a practical and worthwhile idea of how the time in Britain might best be used
Has not participated in a similar Fellowship scheme before
Evidence of drive and motivation in your career and associated field of broadcasting

Please note that applicants must have permission from their organisations to be absent during this period.
