UNICEF mission to Pakistan finds devastation in Sindh

A UNICEF mission to flood-affected Shadatkot, Sindh, Pakistan in late November revealed near total destruction in rural areas with returning internally displaced persons, IDPs, finding no homes, no food, no schools and no livelihoods.

Heavy monsoon rains began wreaking havoc in the area in July of this year. Marixie Mercado is with UNICEF, the UN Children's Fund:

" While the majority of the IDP population is returning in Sindh, stagnant flood waters continue to block some from returning. Two hundred seventy one schools are still being used for shelter, housing over 40,000 people. And additional 54,000 displaced people, including over 30,000 children, remain in camps in Baluchistan."

The United Nations has rated the floods in Pakistan as the greatest humanitarian disaster in UN history. While the death toll was a fraction of that in previous disasters, some 14 million people have suffered losses requiring long or short term help.
